The Mole can be found throughout mainland Britain but is absent from Ireland and some off shore islands. It is found anywhere the soil is suitable for tunnelling, but will avoid shallow or stony soil, waterlogged or very acidic soil. It can be found in permanent grasslands and deciduous woodlands and can also be found in playing fields cemeteries golf courses and private gardens.
Moles live in a tunnelling system underground and are solitary in there habits there tunnel system can cover an area of 400 – 2000 sq meters. There main diet is earthworms but will also eat other invertebrates like slugs and insect larvae. Most of there prey is caught when falling in to there tunnelling system witch acts as a pitfall trap. They continuously patrol the tunnels with then short rest periods this is around patrolling for 4 1\2 hours then resting for 31\2 hours.
Moles cause most of there damage by there mole hills which are unsightly on amenity and sporting grasslands but causes unevenness of the surface but also deterioration of the sward by providing a seed bed for weeds. The molehills can also damage mowing machinery for obvious reasons molehills are unwelcome on expensive turf of golf and bowling greens. In agriculture if the soil from molehills gets in to silage grass it can result in unpalatable silage and is a possible source of Listeriosis in sheep fed on silage. Damage can occur to arable crops and gardens when moles burrow under seedlings and plants causing wilting and death.
The breeding season is from February to June which there is usually one litter. After a 4 week gestation period the young are born blind and without fur. After 5 weeks they will leave the nest.
